Derek Gleeson, co-principal conductor

Ivalyo Vassilev, piano

Founded in 1892, the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra is the national orchestra of Bulgaria and has long established itself as one of the leading cultural institutions, representative of the overall contemporary musical culture of the country. Their Armstrong debut will feature an all-Beethoven program featuring repertoire not yet performed on our series.

“The orchestra had the opportunity to shine with 'Scheherazade' by Rimsky-Korsakov, where the performance of the woodwinds and the cut sound of the brass brought the audience to ecstasy and to shouts for an encore.”

The Western Daily Press Bristol, UK

“The Sofia Philharmonic is an orchestra that excels in all the most important aspects of performing art: discipline, interpretive capabilities and virtuosity - it maintains a permanently rhythmic, calm and smooth sound.”

The Independent and Gazette Richmond, USA
